Our new pond bacteria
Marks Koi Food Gel Bacteria consists of a gel with live bacteria, which have been specially cultivated to start up the biological filter and to maintain optimal functioning. The biological filter breaks down proteins from the pond water into ammonia and nitrite, which are already toxic to the fish in lower concentrations. Nitrifying bacteria in the biological filter convert ammonia and nitrite into the less harmful nitrate. Nitrate is acceptable to the fish in higher concentrations and its concentration decreases when absorbed by pond plants or water changes.
Under normal circumstances, it takes 6 to 8 weeks to start up a biological filter after winter, after cleaning or replacement, for safe concentrations of ammonia and nitrite.
